El Ombú de Areco, an historical estancia (ranch) just over an hour's drive from downtown Buenos Aires, is located in San Antonio de Areco, birthplace of the gaucho tradition. The Late-Colonial style mansion, built in 1880 by Lieutenant-general Pablo Riccheri, offers elegant lodging in nine en-suite rooms, delicious Argentine cuisine and gaucho and folkloric demonstrations. ©2007 Ellen Barone.
